Would the Yamaha FJR be a smart choice for a novice, as myself?
I have never had a motorcycle and I am researching different bikes. Also I'm concerned about the clutchless feature of the FJR. Would this be a problem for a rookie rider? Can someone advise? Thanks I appreciate the help.
The clutchless feature would actually make riding easier (though I've never ridden one of these) since it would give you that much less to think about. Still, I wouldn't recommend it. Ultimately you want to be able to ride ANY bike, so why not learn on one with a clutch (like 99.99% of them)? You can always switch to the clutchless FJR.
Okay, now for the bad news... The FJR is a bad@ss bike, and newbies should stay away from 145bhp monsters like this. Honestly, if you're really new, I'd suggest a used general purpose bike (Nighthawk, etc.) until you're used to riding. If you're leaning toward the FJR crowd of crotchrockets, then buy a used 600cc Katana or other good, but not psycho bike and get used to riding. Just plan on selling it and upgrading in a couple of years after you've had some time in the saddle.
I started out on an old Honda with... I don't know... maybe 50bhp? And it was astonishing to me how much power it felt like I had. I upgraded after about three years, but still, I don't see the need for 145bhp in a motorcycle.
Good luck and be sure to take a class! They're worth their weight in gold... ...just learning about and practicing emergency stopping saved my life on at least two occasions.

Sports Bike
Sport touring refers to either a style of motorcycle design, or a philosophy of riding. It is an attempt to blend performance with long-distance capabilities while providing comfort and relative safety to the rider. Sport touring has evolved over decades from simply strapping a bag to the back of any sporty motorcycle to a very specified genre of motorcycle riding for which specific models of motorcycles, luggage, riding apparel and other accessories have been designed.
However, this class has become important and competitive enough that many manufactures now offer purpose-built engines for their sport touring models. The Honda ST series engines have never been used in any other models. The Yamaha FJR1300's engine, though closely related to the 1000cc R1 sport bike engines in design, is in fact a dedicated engine available only in the sport touring FJR models. Kawasaki introduced the new 1400cc Concours in 2007 with a dedicated engine design.
