I have a 2000 mercury cougar V6 79000m overheated a week ago, service center is claiming needs a new motor?

Last week I was driving home from work when I noticed my car was smoking and temp was at red. I pull my car over as soon as I could but not before the car steering became tight. it was towed to dealer service center were less than 2 months ago had oil pan, oil filter and sway bar replaced and they were supposed to check the car for any other problems (they gave me a check list all stated good). The mechanic called me the next day and said it was a water pump and radiator hose $450 then later said spark plugs were black another $180 then called and said I need a new motor $5800 and none of it is covered under warrantee. I still owe $6400 on the car and planed on trading it for a new car but now I do not think a dealer would take it for a trade in and I do not think it is worth me putting all that money into even if I had it. What should I do? You know of a dealer that would trade it in as is?

Hi.......your in a pickle. First off, the car has a book value off $3400 in good condition. Taking it to the dealer is not a good idea. They charge way too much for labor, and all the money retail for parts. I would ask a few friends for a local mechanic who could swap the motor. Most cars that overheat just warp the head and blow the head gasket. Many dealers know this, tell the owner it needs a new motor, and just get away with doing a head job......( a new or remanufactered head, new valves, and hopefully a new timing belt too). A regular shop would charge $600-900 for this repair. Its possible your mechanic (not a dealer's mechanic) can find a junkyard motor. Miles are usually unknown, but as long as it runs good, its alot cheaper to just do a total swap. Prices vary widely, I wouldnt know offhand about that particular motor, but it should be between $800-1500. Lots of stores like Advance Auto parts or Autozone offer remanufactered motors, or rebuilt motors. Jasper engines is a nationwide motor replacement company, with locations all over, check your phone book, or online. That will be a virtually new motor with a 12,000 mile warrenty. Prices for these run roughly $1500-2500. Get a mechanic to install one of these, and your car should run well for years with good maintainance. Right now, find another mechanic who your friends recommend, and get your car towed over there. $5800 is a rediculous price to pay for a motor, especially on a 2000 cougar. Also consider buying a cheap used car. You didnt specify where you live, but your Cougar is gonna be out of commision for a while, probably a month or two, maybe more. As for your other question, not too many buyers for a car that needs a motor, you'll be lucky to get $800 if you take that route. I have a cheap car for sale, a 1992 Dodge Spirit, excellent condition, well maintained, good on gas and ice cold air. Go to craigslist.org and click on Arkansas, cars and trucks for sale. You can read a full discription of all service records, and see pics of it too. I listed it a few times this past week, it should be easy to find. If your interested in it, i'll drive it to you for expenses, and i'll take $1700 cash for it.........Good Luck!!
